Harness Engineering — Visual 3 of 3

The Harness Layer Stack

Step 1 — The universal pattern: four layers

underlying principle context-free · always true · not yet useful harness layer structures · directs · constrains · verifies ← the thing you actually build → useful system named · certified · shippable · reliable output — does real work in the world

The harness is always the middle layer. You can't point at it in a physics textbook, and you can't point at it in the product spec. It lives in the engineering work between the two — and that's exactly what makes it hard, and valuable.

Step 2 — The same stack across three domains

principle harness system output DC motor aircraft wiring LLM agent F = IL × B Lorentz force law stator + magnets wound armature commutator · brushes DC motor torque on demand IEC 60034 drill · fan EV drivetrain V = IR + EM shielding Ohm's law + field theory gauged wire connectors · routing shielding · MIL-SPEC wiring harness certified, mil-spec AS50881 · DO-160 fly-by-wire avionics integrity transformer + attention architecture as principle system prompt tools · execution loop memory · guardrails agent harness Claude Code · Codex guides + sensors taxonomy autonomous action code · research · ops

Three domains, one pattern. The principle is discovered; the harness is engineered; the system is shipped; the output is the value. Swap the domain — the structure is identical.

Step 3 — The key insight

The harness is always the middle layer. Between the physics textbook and the product spec — that's where the work is. physics Lorentz force law motor harness ★ rotation electrical Ohm's law wiring harness ★ signal integrity machine learning transformer arch. agent harness ★ autonomous action ★ = the thing you engineer. The word traveled because the problem is identical across all three domains.

The term "harness" migrated from the stable to the circuit board to the data center because engineers in each field hit the same structural problem: raw capability needs disciplined infrastructure to become reliable output. The word traveled because the challenge is the same.
